Box December 15, 1987 CO 81620 (303) 9494280 The Flonor*e Steve Cowper Governor of Alaska Pouch A Juneau, Alaska 99811 Dear Governor Cowper: On behalf of the community of Avon and the entire Vail Valley, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, and the people of Juneau, for generously allowing The Windfall Fisherman by Skip Wallen to be placed, on loan, here in Avon. I'm delighted to inform you that we've placed the sculpture in a prominent location on Avon Boulevard, and that the 1st Bank of Avon has provided appropriate lighting for the sculpture so that visitors to our community at night are able to enjoy the piece. The footprints in the snow leading up to the sculpture indicate that many hundreds of people have already taken a "closer look" at "the bear", as it's popularly called. Since several hundred thousand people will have the opportunity to enjoy the sculpture during the course of our ski season, its placement here should make many people aware of the State of Alaska's Silver Anniversary and the generous decision by the City of Juneau to allow the sculpture to be displayed here before final, permanent placement at your capitol. I would also like to pass on to you our sincere appreciation to, and admiration of, the sculptor, R.T. Skip Wallen. Along with his obvious artistic talents, he's also a very nice, community minded person, and a great credit to his home city of Juneau. N December 15, 1987 Town of Avon Page 2of2 The Governor of Colorado, Roy Romer, will participate in a dedication of The Windfall Fisherman as the first piece of sculpture cast at our new foundry, Battle Mountain Bronze, on December 30. Although the timing is admittedly short, and the season obviously a busy one for all of us, we would like to invite you to join us at that time. If there is a chance you can be here, please contact our office to discuss the details. The Town will be issuing a formal resolution of thanks on January 12, 1988, and we will forward a copy of that resolution at that time. Again, thank you to you and your city, from the Town of Avon. Box 02-1063 Juneau, Alaska 99802 Dear Mr. Wallen: On behalf of the Town of Avon and the entire Vail Valley community, I would like to praise you for the beauty of your sculpture, the Windfall Fisherman, and to thank you for arranging to have it displayed in our community before moving to it's permanent placement in Juneau in the spring. You'll be happy to know that the sculpture occupies a very prominent location along Avon Boulevard, adjacent to 1st Bank of Avon, which as you know is the lead lender to Battle Mountain Bronze. The sculpture is lighted at night, thanks to 1st Bank, so that our visitors may enjoy it in the nighttime as well as during the day. You'll be pleased to know, I'm sure, that several hundred thousand visitors to our resort this ski season will have an opportunity to view and enjoy your magnificent piece of art. Judging from the wide trail of footprints in the snow leading up to "the bear", as it's affectionately known, I would say many hundreds of people have already taken the time to get a closer look at, and perhaps touch, the Windfall Fisherman. Once Again, our community is deeply indebted to you for your generous decision to allow the sculpture to be placed on display here before heading to it's permanent home in Juneau. If there is ever any way in which we may repay this kindness, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again, and please accept our congratulations and admiration for your magnificent work of art. S~incerelfy,i Allan R. l~Ottingham, Mayor's Town of Avon Town of Avon P. O.
