ADOPTED this 22nd day of February, 1983 TOWN COUNCIL TOWN OF - AVON A 1 R. tingham, yor 0 TO: Richard Blodgett, Town Manager FROM: William James, Finance Directo DATE: February 16, 1983 SUBJECT: Pine Beetle Control On February 3, 1983, I attended a meeting regarding Pine Beetle Control for,Upper Eagle Valley. Basically, the meeting outlined the following facts: 1) Federal Government has cut approximately $1.4 million from this area for Pine Beetle Control. 2) However, Federal Funds has been increased for Pest Control. 3) The funds are being diverted-to areas of the United States for Pest Control. 4) Infestations have occurred in and around Minturn as well ..as Cross Creek, Fall Creek, Elk Creek and is headed toward the Holy Cross Wilderness area. 5) The control of Pine Beetle is an.expensive process, since the trees have to be cut down, sprayed and then covered for a period of time with plastic to kill the beetle. 6) One tree infested can infest 3-20 more trees. Therefore, without federal funding to control the Dine Beetle, other areas could be infested causing loss of numerous trees in the valley area. Attached is ,a resolution for the town to support, continued federal funding for Pest Control as well as a form letter to be signed by the Town Manager and Chairperson for the Chamber of Commerce. 0 0 Tatun of ~Ilvn F. 0. Pax P Aran, @Ialarabo 81620 (303) 449-42M February 17, 1983 Honorable Ray Kogovsek U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Honorable Mr. Kogovsek: As you may or may not know, the Summit/Upper Eagle Counties have lost funding for pest control for fiscal year 1983. The Town of Avon is concerned with the loss of these funds for controlling Pine Beetle infestations in Upper Eagle County. It is our understanding that the Federal Government has increased funding for pest control, but that funds previously designated for Upper Eagle County are being diverted to other areas of the United States for pest control. The loss of Pine trees in Upper Eagle County can result in loss of natural beauty as well as loss of revenues for resort areas. Therefore, we are asking for your support to renew the funding of pest control funds for Upper Eagle County. Sincerely, Richard Blodgett Town Manager RB/jb
