RESOLUTION NO. 21-07
DECLARING THE TOWN OF AVON A GO ELECTRIC VEHICLE (GoEV) TOWN AND
PLEDGING TO MAINTAIN THE AVON ELECTRIC VEHICLE READINESS PLAN WITH
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES
WHEREAS, Avon Town Council adopted the 2016 Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County
Community on December 13, 2016. The plan recommends climate action goals and strategies by sector
to achieve greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of 25% by 2025 and 80% by 2050; and
WHEREAS, Avon Town Council directed Town Staff to purchase 100% renewable electricity through
Holy Cross Energy's Renewable Energy Purchase Program on May 14, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Avon Town Council approved the Avon Electric Vehicle Readiness Work Plan on
September 10, 2019; and
WHEREAS, the petroleum -fueled transportation sector is now the largest source of greenhouse gas
emissions in the nation and is a contributing factor to air pollution and climate change, threatening the
health of our citizens and the sustainability of our planet; and
WHEREAS, the transportation sector needs support to move toward adoption of clean energy
technology, including electric vehicles ("EVs"), that supports a healthy environment and economy. The
term electric vehicles includes: Battery Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Hydrogen
Fuel Cell Vehicles; and
WHEREAS, Electrification of cars, trucks, and buses is needed to achieve deep reductions in carbon
pollution, and the benefits grow over time as utilities transition to higher levels of renewable energy; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Avon is dedicated to being a leader in the use of clean energy, establishing
policies and programs that conserve energy, promoting sustainability, and supporting Colorado's goal of
nearly one million EVs on its roads by 2030; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Avon will not be able to meet its goals for reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions without electrifying the transportation sector.
NOW THEREFORE, the Avon Town Council, hereby DECLARE the Town of Avon a GoEV
Town and pledges to continue to maintain the Avon Electric Vehicle Readiness Work Plan with
implementation strategies. The Plan will include goals to transition the Avon fleet and transit buses
to 100% electric or zero emissions vehicles by 2050. In addition, the Town of Avon will work with
the community on programs, policies, incentives and regulatory approaches to transition 100% of
all vehicles within the Town to zero emissions by 2050.
