10-23-2017 Letter in Support of Walking Mountains Science Center's LPORA Avon COLORADO October 23, 2017 Dear GOCO Board, Post Office Box 975 One Lahe Street Avon, CO 81620 970-748-4000 970-949-9139 Fax 970-845-7708 TTY On behalf of the Town of Avon, we would like to express our support for Walking Mountains Science Center's LPOR application to fund the Environmental Education Community Trails Plan. This project will provide a necessary access point to outdoor recreation for our residents and visitors and directly aligns with the Town of Avon's strategic vision- "to provide a high quality of life, today and in the future, for a diverse population; and to promote their ability to live, work, visit and recreate in the community." The Town of Avon, surrounded by natural beauty, is today a strong community, which will maintain a focus on families and workers, and that will build on its strengths to become a nationally and internationally recognized year-round mountain resort community. Committed to providing a high level of municipal services for our citizens and visitors, and the stewardship of our natural resources, Avon will expand its cultural, recreational and educational offerings in partnership with our broader community and regional public and private sector agencies, thereby ensuring sustained economic vitality and a vibrant community experience. We see the Environmental Education Community Trails Plan furthering these principles on many levels, but specifically by providing nearby recreational opportunities that can be accessed by foot and bike. Providing an exceptional system of parks, trails, and recreational programs to serve the year-round needs of area residents and visitors is an important Town goal. With the Town of Avon's recent award of an LPOR grant for the improvements for Nottingham Park, we see this as an opportunity to build on current momentum and provide a connection for Avon residents and visitors from the outdoor recreational experience in town to the Walking Mountains' Campus and surrounding open space and public lands. This connection could support more "backcountry" experiences and encourage many visitor and residents to access public lands with miles of hiking trails within such a close proximity. This project will be a benefit to the Town of Avon residents and visitors and will set the stage for future collaboration on improved connectivity and walkability from the town to local outdoor spaces and recreation opportunities, we are proud to support it.
