2011-2014 Proclamations`"'" °"' NATIONAL CITIES OF NATItNALST COMMUNI LEAGUE SERVIGE TY Mayors d CITIES auors Day of Recognition for National Service Town of Avon, Colorado PROCLAMATION NATIONAL SERVICE RECOGNITION DAY WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American and Town of Avon character, and central to how we meet our challenges; and WHEREAS, the nation's mayors are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost - effective strategy to meet the needs of towns; and WHEREAS, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps address the most pressing challenges facing our cities and nation, from mentoring students and supporting seniors to age independently in their homes and towns, to preserving our natural environment and helping communities meet their most pressing needs; and WHEREAS, national service expands economic opportunity by creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing education, career skills, and leadership abilities for those who serve; and WHEREAS, national service participants serve in more than 70,000 locations across the country, and more than 50 locations in Eagle County, bolstering the civic, neighborhood, and faith -based organizations that are so vital to our economic and social well- being; and WHEREAS, national service participants increase the impact of the organizations they serve with, both through their direct service and by recruiting and managing many additional volunteers; and WHEREAS, national service represents a unique public - private partnership that invests in community solutions and leverages non - federal resources to strengthen community impact and increase the return on taxpayer dollars; and WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers demonstrate commitment, dedication, and patriotism by making an intensive commitment to service, a commitment that remains with them in their future endeavors; and WHEREAS, the Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with mayors nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives, and strengthen communities; and is joining with the National League of Cities, City of Service, and mayors across the country to recognize the impact of service on the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 1, 2014. One Book One Valley is a collaborative effort by several groups, including The Bookworm of Edwards, Colorado Mountain College, Eagle Valley Library District, and the Town of Vail Public Library, with the goal of promoting this program. This program was created initially by librarian and bestselling author Nancy Pearl, in Seattle, Washington. The Eagle Valley community through the local organizations now recognizes this program annually in hopes of promoting a sense of community by sharing a common topic for conversation, and to encourage the value and fun of reading together. Lori Ann Barnes, Vail Town Librarian, will present this initiative to the Town Council and ask that Mayor Carroll read the Proclamation. The Town Council is asked to consider adopting the attached Proclamation that supports Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 4, 2012. According to its supporters this is a statewide day of philanthropy where citizens are encouraged to "Give Where You Live" by logging onto www.GivingFirst.org and investing in local charitable organizations. The third annual Colorado Gives Day takes place midnight to midnight on Tuesday, December 4, 2012. This year, twenty Eagle County -based non - profits will be taking part in Colorado Gives Day on December 4. Those local organizations are: Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum, Eagle River Watershed Council, Eagle River Youth Coalition, Eagle Valley Land Trust, Habitat for Humanity, Mountain Valley Horse Rescue, Red Ribbon Project, Roundup River Ranch, SOS Outreach, The Literacy Project, The Family Learning Center, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Way, Vail Symposium, Vail Valley Charitable Fund, Vail Valley Foundation, Vail Veterans Program and Walking Mountains Science Center. Colorado Gives Day is a project of GivingFirst.org, an online resource created by Community First Foundation that profiles Colorado non - profits and encourages charitable giving within our state. GivingFirst.org provides comprehensive, objective, and up -to -date information about hundreds of Colorado non - profit organizations, along with an on -line donation system to support those organizations. Last year, Colorado Gives Day raised $12.8 million for Colorado charities in one 24 -hour period, and $125,000 locally.
