Veteran's Day Proclamation
Whereas, over two hundred years ago, the signers of the Declaration of
Independence declared that " **all men are created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness ";
Whereas, throughout the course of American history, courageous men and
women have taken up arms to secure, defend, and maintain these core
principles upon which freedoms depend;
Whereas, the men and women who have and currently are serving in the
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard of the United States of
America have made major contributions toward the preservation of this Nation
and her people;
Whereas, the Congress of the United States of America has designated the
eleventh day of November of each year as Veterans Day and it has become a
significant part of our American heritage as we recognize the millions of our
citizens whose military service has had a profound effect on history;
Whereas, the Nation and the free world are eternally grateful for the
contributions of American veterans - men and women - to the advancement of
the cause of an honorable world peace.
Now, Therefore, the Town Council of the Town of Avon, State of Colorado,
hereby proclaims November 11, 2008 as Veterans Day and calls upon all
citizens to join the Town in recognizing and honoring those who have served
and are serving to preserve the principles of Justice, Freedom and Democracy.
Let this proclamation be entered into the official records of the Town.

WHEREAS, throughout our history, the people of the United States have recognized that free
access to a public school education for all children is a vital component of a strong and vibrant
community and country; and
WHEREAS, throughout the history of the United States, the graduates of our public schools
have become social, political scientific and economic leaders of this nation and their communities;
and
WHEREAS, much of this progress can be attributed to the qualified and dedicated teachers
entrusted with the educational and development of our children to their full potential; and
WHEREAS, teachers should be accorded high public esteem, reflecting the value our community
places on public education; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Avon is keenly aware of the importance and impact of teachers on
children; and
WHEREAS, Avon's Council leaders and citizens recognize and appreciate the teachers of Avon
Elementary School, our local school, for their teaching professionalism and the pride they take in
teaching the young people of this community; and

2005 National Teacher Day
May 3 is National Teacher Day, a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the
contributions they make to our lives. While it does take a lot of people to make a
' succeed, this day focuses on the teachers who work to make public schools great
students to succeed in life.

' The origins of Teacher Day are murky. Around 1944 Arkansas teacher Mattye Why
Woodridge began corresponding with political and education leaders about the neE
national day to honor teachers. Woodbridge wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt who in 19
the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day.
NEA along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates and the Dodge City (Kan. ) I
Congress to create a national day celebrating teachers. Congress declared March
National Teacher Day for that year only.
NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in Ma
1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first ft
May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that
Teacher Day.

Let me know what I can do to help implement the "Efficiencies" approved
last night. I think only Brian had substantive additions; the gist I
got was: (1) include a little conflicts of interest section under /with
our new agenda item time of "Discussion on Agenda" and (2) [something
else - i forget!!!] What was it?
Also, where can we look for a Teacher Appreciation Proclamation to use
as a starting point for ours? Do you have one that I can read & update?
I'd like to get this in front of Council when AES is there, if possible.

WHEREAS, Six million Jewish men, women & children were systematically
slaughtered by Hitler between 1933 and 1945, thus destroying a once
unique & vibrant culture; and
WHEREAS, Millions of other people such as, homosexuals, gypsies, handicapped &
political & religious dissidents were also annihilated because of racial,
ethnic and national reasons; and
WHEREAS, We honor the survivors of the Holocaust for their courage and mourn
with them the loss of fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and other
family members and friends; and
WHEREAS, We honor the brave Liberators and Righteous People who were not
silent and who saved many Jewish and non - Jewish lives; and
WHEREAS, Pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 1980) the
United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of
Remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 30
through Sunday, May 7, 2000, including the international Day of
Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, May 2, 2000.

remember the destruction that occurred and to always be reminded of
what happens to mankind when hatred, bigotry and intolerance reign;

B'nai Vail Congregation, the Jewish congregation in the Eagle Valley, is sponsoring the
interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Program at Trinity Baptist Church, Edwards on
Saturday, April 291b at 7:30 PM. We hope that you will be able to attend.
Please let us know if you will attend so that we may acknowledge your attendance.
This interfaith program is one of the series of interfaith services at the Chapel.
We hope that you will join our nation and the cities and counties in issuing a
Proclamation for the Days of Remembrance for 2000.
Clergy representing the 6 congregations at the Chapel will be participating along with a
Liberator of the camps, survivors and children of survivors of the Holocaust, Soloist
Maxine Graboyes and children and members of B'nai Vail Congregation.
We will also be remembering those victims who were not Jewish and those people who
were not silent and who saved many Jewish and non - Jewish lives.
B'nai Vail is also sponsoring Holocaust educational programs and exhibits and books at
the libraries for children and adults.

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state - sponsored, systematic persecution and
annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators
between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims - six million
were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped, and Poles were also
targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national
reasons. Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses,
Soviet prisoners of war and political dissidents, also suffered grievous
oppression and death under Nazi tyranny.
WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the
moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and
WHEREAS, we the people of A_v_on _-- ________ should always remember the
terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred,
persecution, and tyranny; and

stamina, extensive training, courage, and selfless concern for the welfare of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, In addition to their daily service to communities, firefighters through the state and
across the nation have joined the Muscular Dystrophy Association ( "MDA') for the past fifty
years in the fight against neuromuscular diseases; and
WHEREAS, Colorado fire fighters collected a record breaking $772,251 over 100 communities
with their 2003 "Fill the Boot" campaign for MDA, again making them MDA's largest source of
funding; and
WHEREAS, The Muscular Dystrophy Association is extremely grateful to the Eagle River Fire
Protection District ( "ERFPD ") firefighters for their support and dedication; and
WHEREAS, The funds collected by the ERFPD fire fighters assist MDA in providing medical
services at local clinics, summer camp, research grants, support groups, and public education
seminars at no cost to local children and families; and
WHEREAS, In honor of the efforts of the Eagle River Fire Protection District fire fighters, the

I am writing to request your assistance in recognizing the outstanding efforts of the Eagle
River fire fighters on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The money
collected in their 2003 "Fill the Boot" campaign, combined with the totals from fire
departments across the state, brought in a record $772,251.
To our appreciation to the fire fighters in your community, the Muscular Dystrophy
Association is sponsoring Avon Fire Fighter Appreciation Week on August 30th —
September 5"', 2004. I am requesting that the city of Avon proclaim this week Avon
Fighter Appreciation Week. This courageous group of men and women can be
recognized not only for their service to our communities but also for their dedication to
area children and adults who are battling muscle disease.

among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness ";
Whereas, throughout the course of American history, courageous men and
women have taken up arms to secure, defend, and maintain these core
principles upon which freedoms depend;
Whereas, today, there are more than 25 million living veterans who served
our Nation in times of peace and war. These gallant Americans served on
the land, at sea, and in the air, on the shores of Omaha Beach, at the rivers
of Korea, in the jungles of Vietnam, on the sands of the Persian Gulf, in the
mountains of Afghanistan, and many other battlefields around the globe. By
their service, they kept America strong, and they protected our way of life
from tyranny's grip for over two centuries;
Whereas, the men and women who have and currently are serving in the
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard of the United States of
America have made major contributions toward the preservation of this
Nation and her people;
Whereas, the services performed by these Americans have demonstrated
the willingness of our nation to meet the challenges of those forces wishing
to subjugate individual determination through armed conflict;
Whereas, honorable service performed in the defense of our nation and her
cause in time of war is the highest form of citizenship;
Whereas, the Congress of the United States of America has designated the
eleventh day of November of each year as Veterans Day;
Whereas, Veterans Day has become a significant part of our American
heritage as we recognize the millions of our citizens whose military service
has had a profound effect on history;
Whereas, the Nation and the free world are eternally grateful for the
contributions of American veterans - men and women - to the advancement
of the cause of an honorable world peace.
Now, Therefore, the Town Council of the Town of Avon, State of Colorado,
hereby proclaims November 11, 2003 as Veterans Day and calls upon all
citizens, schools, businesses, places of worship, media, and civic and
fraternal organizations to join the Town in recognizing the valor and sacrifice
of our veterans through display of the flag of the United States and
appropriate ceremonies in honor of those who have served and are serving
to preserve the principles of Justice, Freedom and Democracy.
Let this proclamation be entered into the official records of
