RE: Staff Update
DATE: October 14, 2021
OPENING COMMENTS: Thank you to each of you for your attendance at the CASE Committee and
Council Work Session. We are grateful for your time, energy, and efforts!
SUMMARY: The direction provided by Town Council on (1) fireworks in January was to not produce a
fireworks event in January 2022; and, (2) to host live music on Monday of Labor Day Weekend using more
local and/or regional talent. Additionally, I have included some of the comments and/or questions raised by
Council during our work session. In a few cases, I have provided comments/answers in italics. Also, I have
included an update on the Circus.
CURRENT / PLANNING ACTIVITY:
1. January in July:
a. Council was supportive of CASE recommendation to not produce a fireworks event in
January 2022.
2. Summer’s End:
a. Council was supportive of CASE recommendation to host live music on Monday of Labor
Day Weekend using more local and/or regional talent. Direction from the Town Manager
was to reduce overall budget to no more than $25,000 all-in.
3. Other Direction/Comments/Questions Raised:
a. No fireworks in July of 2022; Town Council wants to be a leader in the community and
directed staff to discontinue fireworks at Salute and, develop a new element such as a
drone show or a laser show.
b. Develop a winter event that will make a “splash” in 2023 and determine the right month -
January vs February vs March. We do not need to figure this out immediately and may be
further out than 2023. This will be discussed as part of our 10-year strategy work
sessions. Right event / right time!
c. What is the goal or purpose of a winter event? The direction from Council the past two
years has been community focused events as the primary goal. I believe the next step and
in the 10-year strategy, is “heads in beds”. We need thoughtfully consider how we phase
these type of events in.
d. Offer a blanket only section close to front of stage and in front of chairs at Dancing in the
Park.
e. Clarity on the reason behind why we close the stage doors during concerts.
f. Request to keep the grass area south of the VIP area at Salute open to the public during
the day.
g. Clarity on why guests are asked to dump out their Nalgene’s filled with ice cold water only
to fill with warm water.
h. Request to consider the fees assessed when “new” producers are producing an event in
Avon as they might be too high.
970-748-4065 ddempsey@avon.org
i. Did not have the type of product/menu at bar that was appealing to all i.e., “too sweet”.
Along those lines, I do plan to offer hand poured liquor cocktails and potentially wine in
2022 pending budget and the additional expense of compostable cups, additional ice,
liquor, permitting, etc. As mentioned before, I needed to get my feet wet first and 2022 is
the right to expand and/or tweak offerings.
j. Consider adding a poetry slam, writers’ conference, storytelling, etc. to our lineup.
k. Consider if we are at capacity and shift activating and marketing to the shoulder season
even more. I believe we have space in our venues considering the different venues we
have as supported by the attached Exhibit A.
i. Exhibit A details the number of times the main athletic field, Terrace Main Street
Mall, etc. are activated between Friday of Memorial Weekend and Monday of
Labor Day in the 2022 proposed event calendar.
ii. And, considers Best of the West and Heart & Soul Festival as activation further
into the shoulder season.
iii. Greatly depends on levels of staffing more than venue space as well as
community tolerance.
l. Chris Cofelice offered that Sunday through Thursday are typically the softer times with a
need to fill more rooms.
4. Circus Colorado:
a. Not discussed at Council Work Session. Included in the 2022 proposed budget at same
level of funding ($35,000). With the requirement of (1) moving to lower field; (2) and, lower
ticket price / more affordable for local community.
5. 10 Year Vision:
a. See link to CASE meeting on May 18th which includes the draft document
b. Plan for a 10-year strategy work session with Council in February 2022.
FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS:
1. Community Survey Results – results can be found here
