CASE Packet 2.25.20 970.748.4004 eric@avon.org TO: Culture, Arts and Special Events Committee FROM: Eric Heil, Town Manager RE: Future Agendas DATE: February 25, 2020 SUMMARY: This report discusses proposed future agenda items for the CASE Committee. a. Mastering of a Music City: Attached is a lengthy and thorough document that discusses the benefits of building a music based economy and the strategies to implement a “Music City”. This document is clearly geared towards larger cities, like Nashville, Memphis and Austin, so we will have to use some critical thinking to pull what is relevant and applicable to Avon. Still, there are several recommended strategies that Avon is starting already. b. Culture Plan Elements: Arts and Culture: Future agendas will need to include specific discussions on “arts” and “culture”, what is appropriate for Avon, and fostering these elements may be implemented in Avon through events, programs or policies. c. Additional Events: A number of additional event ideas have been mentioned by CASE Committee members, Council members and Staff including (but truly not limited to!): winter ice sculptures, winter fireworks, mid-December holiday/shopping event, car show, movies in the park, local theater on the Avon Pavilion stage, ticketed shows on the Terrace, farmer’s market. Also, based on the Joint CASE- Council meeting, Staff will proceed on details and budget proposals for (1) an end of ski season Apres Avon event, (2) a free Best of the West Fest in June showcasing Colorado based musicians and (3) a ticketed Heart and Soul Fest in September feature national acts. d. Special Events Review of Peer Communities: Events, Budget, Staffing, Facilities, Reconnaissance: Staff will update our existing special event review of peer communities and will add additional communities and add more information on budgets, staffing and facilities. We hope to have this together by June. In addition, we will encourage all of us to attend special events in other communities and share our observations what worked and what did not work. e. Business Strategies: Discussion of business strategies should also be part of our future agendas. I know there are several members of CASE with excellent insights on business strategy principles and how we may apply them to Avon’s efforts. In addition, I think it is very helpful to develop our 10-20 vision of CASE, with attention to the activities and competition with our peer communities, and present a strategy to Council on how to achieve such a vision. Thank you, Eric
