•Provide advice regarding Health & Rec initiatives
•Review & research Town’s existing Health & Rec opportunities: (1)
‘healthy community’ issues, (2) comparisons to peer communities,
design, (3) programming and cost of facility improvements
•Act as a community liaison, conduct community outreach and gain
community feedback
•Provide recommendations to Town Council

Community Swim Program Review
May is National Water Safety Month
•In the U.S. drowning takes an average of 3,500-4,000 lives per year. That is an average of 10 fatal drownings per day.
•Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury related death for children ages 1-4. Drowning remains in the top 5
causes of unintentional injury related death from birth to 54 years old.
•Learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for 1-4 year olds who take formal swim lessons.

RECREATION CENTER UPDATE
Community Swim Program Review –Group Swim Lessons
•Formed in Fall 2016
•Provided 234+ free or discounted swim lessons
•Taught over 1,000 children in group swim lessons since 2016
•Partnered with Avon Elementary School (1st, 3rd, 5th grades) –
taught 180+ students annually in the Spring/Fall
•Battle Mountain High School Physical Education Class 2018-
2019
•Lessons are offered through the American Red Cross for all
ages 6 months and up, including adults!

Community Swim Program Review –Swim Team
•Formed in Fall 2016
•Recreational, Age-Group, Senior levels offered through USA
Swimming
•2017-Present:51-79 active swimmers
•Vail Ski &Snowboard Academy (VSSA) Swim Program established
2019 –8 swimmers
•Top 20 finishes at state meet –team and individual level
•Regional &National qualifiers and Head Coach recognition
•14 swimmers have become Town employees

•Expand school programs to Homestake Peak Elementary
School and Berry Creek Middle School
