One Book One ValleyOFFICIAL PROCLAMATION ONE BOOK ONE VALLEY, 2017 A valley-wide Community Read sponsored by the Towns of Avon, Eagle, Gypsum, Minturn, Red Cliff and Vail WHEREAS, community read programs have united and uplifted hundreds of cities and principalities throughout the United States of America; and, WHEREAS, the book “High Divide” by Lin Enger (a teacher of English at Minnesota State University) is Enger’s second novel and a masterfully told Western reinvention of Homer's Odyssey, set against a backdrop of beauty and danger. This book is also the moving story of a man coming to terms with his past; and, WHEREAS, this Eagle Valley community read will feature book talks and discussions, special related events such as a lecture on the Indian Wars, a Horseshoe Art program, a presentation on the Ute Native Americans and the History of the Slopes, and Pioneer Days hosted by the partnering organizations and a special guest appearance by the author; and, WHEREAS, the Vail Public Library, in collaboration with the Bookworm of Edwards, Colorado Mountain College, Battle Mountain High School, Eagle Valley High School and Vail Mountain School have resolved to bring this valley-wide Community Read program to the citizens of Eagle County; and, WHEREAS, the One Book One Valley initiative will encourage literacy and shared enjoyment of reading throughout Eagle County, NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jennie Fancher, Mayor, Town of Avon, do hereby promote the One Book One Valley initiative and officially announce and promote the novel “High Divide” to all Eagle County residents for their enjoyment and the enjoyment of all.
